The first researcher to emotions

Did you ever think about your emotions and feelings?

Your emotions are really important in your life. How many times did you go to the store to get some milk and when you came out you had a long receipt in your hand? How many times did you doubt if you have to buy these expensive clothes or shoes? 80% of our choices are based on emotions.  Emotions are a sensation of the body plus the awareness of this sensation in a response to what you are experiencing or expecting.

But what do we know about it? And how do we know this?

There a several people who have studied emotions. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was the first one. He was a self-taught in the field of natural history, biology and geology. Darwin owes his fame to his theory of evolution. But he was not only famous because of this.

Darwin’s claim of universal facial expressions

Charles Darwin has done pronunciations about emotions and facial expressions. Darwin compared the emotions between different kinds of cultures to improve his work. Darwin claimed that particular emotions result in similar facial expressions. For Darwin, emotion had an evolutionary history that could be traced across cultures and species. So even if you live in Norway, Japan or Brazil you will make the same face for sadness. It is hard to image because there is a lot of differences in language, culture and development. But it is true: facial expressions are universal.

This indicates that neuroscientific techniques can be applied to the measurement of the emotions of any person, regardless of their gender, race, culture, religion, etc.  This is because these emotions and facial expressions are not learned but congenital.

Finally, after a century Darwins work was recognized what he deserved. The Expressions of the Emotions in Man and Animals is a book by Charles Darwin published in 1872. In this book, Darwin seeks to trace of such human characteristics as the lifting of the eyebrows in moments of surprise and the mental confusion which typically accompanies blushing.  This book is still the basic for research on facial expressions and emotional life of human and animals.  This research of Darwin has expanded the knowledge of emotions and is still used by a lot of researchers.
